Obituary for Steve Kapcio

Steve Kapcio, 95, of East Syracuse, died peacefully on May 15, 2020.

Steve was born in Utica, New York on December 29, 1924. After graduation from Utica Free Academy in 1942, he joined the Navy in February 1943. Steve attended Navy schools to become a machinist mate and graduated with a second class rating. He was assigned to the USS NEMASKET (AOG-10) an oiler operating in the South Pacific. The ship’s missions took him to Palau, the Philippines, Iwo Jima, Okinawa and Tokyo. He was honorably discharged in 1946 and returned to Utica. He moved to New York City and worked for three years in the New York Harbor as a machinist. He moved back to Utica, worked at multiple companies in the Mohawk Valley Region and met his bride of 65 plus years, Jennie Palliwade. Steve and Jennie ultimately left Utica and moved to Syracuse, New York where Steve worked at Carrier Corporation in the Research Department, first as a tool maker, then as the Department Manager, for over 31 years. While at Carrier, working as a tool maker, he was involved in introducing a “new” furnace and heat pump.

After moving to Syracuse, Steve and Jennie joined Trinity Lutheran Church. Steve was a very active member and enjoyed working with the Men’s Club and Youth Group of the congregation. He was also very involved in building the new church located in Eastwood. After Trinity closed, Steve and Jennie joined Good Shepherd Lutheran Church in Fayetteville where Steve enjoyed participating in the Sunday morning Adult Forum each week.

Steve volunteered when his children were young by being a Little League Coach and Boy Scout Leader. He enjoyed attending and watching all SU sports. Steve and Jennie volunteered for several non-profit organizations. It brought him great joy to be able to give back to the community.

Steve was a proud veteran and joined Syracuse Honor Flight Mission 006. His two sons, Paul and Bob, as well as two of his grandchildren, joined him in DC for the trip which was a highlight of his military career.

Steve is survived by his wife, Jennie; and three children, Paul Kapcio of Virginia, Robert (Patrice) Kapcio of Florida, Mary Beth (Mark) Sabatino of Jamesville, NY. He is also survived by 4 grandchildren who were the light of his life; William and Caroline Kapcio and Elizabeth and Thomas Sabatino.

The family would like to give a special thanks all the caregivers at Menorah Park for taking such good care of Steve

Private services for family were held at the Schepp Chapel.
