Obituary for Unok Lee

Unok Lee of Manlius, NY died peacefully at home on May 3, 2019, at the age of 84, after a long battle with Alzheimers and Diabetes. Unok Lee was born in Korea in 1934. She lived through the Japanese occupation of Korea, WWII, and the Korean War before marrying her husband Mun in 1954.

They raised four children, and immigrated to New York City in 1974 where they were successful entrepreneurs and owned and operated a variety of gas stations, auto repair shops, and convenience stores.

She was a passionate gardener with a green thumb, and a force in the kitchen where she introduced her grandchildren to Korean food.

Unok and her husband moved to Syracuse in 2014 to be closer to family.

She is survived by her husband, three children, and three grandchildren.

Unok worked tirelessly to provide all four of her children and three grandchildren a college education. Her only sorrow was losing her first born son, Yong, to a tragic accident, in May of 1996.

The family will greet friends from 3:30 to 5:30 on Sunday, May 5 at the Newell-Fay Manlius Chapel, 8171 Cazenovia Road, Manlius, NY 13104. A memorial service will be held on Monday, May 13, 2019 at Moravian Cemetery in Staten Island, NY.

The Lee family would like to extend our gratitude to Hye Sung Kim who has been her aid for the last four years and Hospice of Central New York for their attentiveness and loving care.

In lieu of flowers, memorials may be made in Unok Lee’s name to Hospice of CNY at http://www.hospicecny.org/donate-2/ or to the University at Buffalo Foundation, P.O. Box 900, Buffalo, NY, 14226-0900, benefitting the Yong H. Lee Scholarship.
