Obituary for William P. McGrath

William P. McGrath, 86, of Fayetteville, passed away Sunday, December 23 at Crouse Hospital.

He was born in Syracuse to Harold and Norma Winifred McGrath and attended Nottingham High School where he lettered in tennis and sang in the A’Cappella Choir. He graduated from Syracuse University in 1955 with a degree in business administration.

He was a member of Phi Gamma Delta fraternity and lettered in tennis. Bill was in the Air Force ROTC and spent four years in active duty in the Air Force, achieving the rank of captain.

Bill worked for General Electric in Syracuse and Richmond, VA, for 35 years. After retiring, he worked for Adjusters International, representing New York State supporting communities following disasters. For many years Bill was a member of the Syracuse Chorale and president of its Board of Directors. He was a 23-year member of the Syracuse University Oratorio Society. He also sang in the Richmond Symphony Choir. He was a member of the Fayetteville-Manlius School Board for several years. He became president of the Forman’s Association, a member of the GE Elfun Society, and ran the GE Old News Boys for Toys. He loved to sail and play tennis.

He is survived by his wife of 57 years, Catharine Coburn McGrath; a daughter, Kathryn McGrath (John) Marini of Manlius and a son, William Michael (Michelle) McGrath of Camillus; grandchildren, Jessica and Alexandra Marini and Abigail and Jacob McGrath; siblings, Harold McGrath of Cazenovia, James (Sharon) McGrath of Hudson, Fla., Joyce McGrath Perrin of Fayetteville; and several nieces and nephews. His parents and brother, Robert McGrath preceded him in death.

Calling hours will be Thursday, January 3, from 10-11 a.m. at Eaton-Tubbs Fayetteville Chapel, 7191 E. Genesee St., Fayetteville. A memorial service will follow at 11:00 at the funeral home.
