Obituary

Sister Thomas Marie Corcoran, age 90, went home to God on December 26, 2018 at the Franciscan Villa in Syracuse, NY. She was born in Syracuse to Thomas and Virginia Weis Corcoran. She entered the Sisters of St. Francis in September, 1947 and spent the rest of her life serving God and all those who came under her care. She said of herself, “God has best qualified me in the care of the sick”.

In 1955, Sister received her RN from St. Elizabeth School of Nursing in Utica, NY, and afterward worked in various units of the hospital, obtaining a wide range of experiences. She served in the medical/surgical unit and was head nurse in obstetrics, labor and delivery. She also pursued and received a BS in Occupational Therapy from Utica College, a field in which she eventually held positions of administrator, instructor and field work coordinator. Her years of service were spent ministering at St. Elizabeth Hospital, Mercy Hospital, Loretto Rest, St. Francis Hospital, Hawaii, St. Joseph Hospital, Maria Regina College and Francis House.

Sister will be remembered for her love of God, her dedicated service to her Community, her compassion toward others, happy disposition, and quiet, gentle way.

Sister was predeceased by her parents; brothers, Thomas, Edward, Paul, Robert and William Corcoran; and sisters, Mary Moffett, Eileen McGee, and Virginia Sexton. She is survived by brothers, J. Arthur and Raymond Corcoran; many nieces and nephews; and the Sisters of St. Francis.

A Mass of Christian Burial will be held on Saturday, January 12, 2019 at 11:00 am at the Franciscan Villa Chapel, 6900 Buckley Road, Syracuse, NY 13212. Calling hours will be from 9:15 to 10:45 am in the Chapel. Interment will follow in Assumption Cemetery.

In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to the Sisters of St. Francis of the Neumann Communities, Mission Advancement Office, 6900 Buckley Road, Syracuse, NY.

I was part of the first OT class. In fact we called her sister OT and she would gave us her big smile. I worked with children with special needs needs at BOCES for over 20 years. The degree changed my life to serve children and God. Best to her family, you could be proud of Sister!
